I already installed and uninstalled Yahoo messenger several times and it doesn't help, I tried, Tools/Internet Options/programs/email but yahoo is not on the list, I emailed Yahoo Customer service and I got the same answers I already tried, I know it can be done because I had done it before but I forgot how to

Yahoo doesn't normally appear as one of the choices on the drop menu, cause it's web based mail and not actually installed on your computer. The old way of installing Messenger, no longer works (as you've found out).
Click this link, from Yahoo, to get the latest solution for making Yahoo the default. Included on that page is a link to download their "latest" toolbar---which is necessary for the action to work.
